Application Strategies for Difficult Situations

Reasons For Leaving a Job

You want to make these reasons positive, forward-looking and as impersonal as possible while being truthful. Remember, employers check references.

Instead of "Fired" use...

Instead of "Quit" explain what you did next in a positive way...

Instead of "Laid off" use...

Salary Section

Generally speaking, don't list a salary expectation on the application. Use "Prevailing Wage," or "Open for Discussion" instead.

Job Preferred Section

Always list specific jobs that are available here. Employers need you to specify which job positions you are interested in.

If you can't find a list of exact job titles then use terms that specify the area of work you would like to do: phrases like "Retail Sales" or "Warehouse."

Never say "anything available" in this space as it will just annoy the person who is reviewing it.

No Employment History

Describe experience like school or household chores as if it were employment. Write down any duties you performed and skills you used to perform those duties. Here's an example.
